Executive Director Mary Bazie shares her thoughts in the spring newsletter

Here at Hitchcock, we help women overcome addiction, achieve healing, and reassert control over their lives. We understand that women dealing with addiction will always face challenges, especially from things outside their control. So we work with our women to help them assert control over those things that are within their own power. Our Hitchcock team faces a similar struggle in the face of power dynamics in the public sphere that can impede our best efforts. But we know that there is always hope.

Public budget shortfalls and politics are providing a challenge to our sense of identity and stability. These power dynamics have affected our ability to meet the needs of our clients. The result can be shrinking budgets, public anger about shouldering the burden for the sick and disabled, uneven class issues, and are reflected most in service cuts, taxes, and political posturing which do little to help those most in need. The current climate in behavioral health is certainly a time of change and unpredictability, not unlike the feelings our women experience as they first begin to embrace a life of sobriety.

Funding shifts and cuts make it difficult to prepare or predict the direction or focus agencies should have or how they can continue to stay mission focused and client centered. Shifts in the service environment have been dramatic—we and other providers are experiencing changes both in paradigm and practice. Although change has been a constant in the social services field, this shift is transformative and will forever change what we can provide for clients and how the services are paid for. We are facing a time of forced collaboration to ensure sustainability and future growth.

What we have to guard against is not being prepared for the change or with being reluctant to acknowledge that change is before us. These are also the type of preparations our women make as they prepare to maintain substance abuse free lives—the loss of a loved one, health challenges, or being laid off from work can all lead to drug or alcohol abuse if our women are not emotionally and mentally prepared for the hardships they will inevitably face.

And despite all of the shifts and changes, there is some progress to be seen. Service providers are finally looking for new and innovative ways to better serve clients and ways of sharing resources, both financial and human, to be more efficient and effective. Progress can happen when we realize that no agency can be all things for all people and we are stronger and more efficient together than separately.

Sometimes a challenge can strengthen and deepen our ability to serve clients and communities, as long as we prepare for it. This is lesson we have been reminded of as we have worked to address the effects of powers outside of our control. But this is also a lesson we also endeavor to teach to the women we serve as they face their critical life challenges, and strive to lead productive, sober, happy lives. We are confident that both we and the women of Hitchcock will always rise to the challenge.

In response to the Imperial Avenue tragedies of October 2009, the Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health Services (ADAMHS) Board of Cuyahoga County is planning to open Seasons of Hope, a safe house for women with addiction.

Seasons of Hope will be a place where alcohol or drug-addicted women who are in distress can go for help without feeling ashamed or alienated. The program is designed to provide a caring and supportive environment where women can have access to a shower, clean clothes, a meal, and time to rest and reflect on their situations while reading available treatment and recovery literature and talking to other women who have shared similar experiences. This is NOT a treatment facility, but rather a possible bridge to treatment and resources.
This client-centered method of treatment is a non-traditional, non-directive approach to therapy that allows the client to move at her own pace, encouraging her to become empowered and pursue treatment on her own. Community outreach will be central to the safe house’s mission to both identify and build rapport among women in the community who have an addiction and are experiencing homelessness or other stressors.

Hitchcock Center for Women is a proud partner in Seasons of Hope, and sees this as a vital link to opening the doors to treatment for women struggling with substance abuse and addiction. If you would like more information, or would like to make a tax-deductible donation to the ADAMHS Board of Cuyahoga County for the Seasons of Hope Safe House, please contact Valeria Harper, Chief Operating Officer, at 216-241-3400, ext. 705.

Read Mary Bazie's note from the December 2011 newsletter.

As the hours of sunlight dwindle and the frigid winds and snows arrive, December can be challenging time of transition for us all. Sometimes it may seem as if the renewing and hopeful days of spring will never arrive again. But December can also be a time of hope. The Christmas season helps provide a reminder that the darkness is temporary and the next season is one of renewal and rebirth. Here at Hitchcock we are marking this time of transition by launching the Seasons of Hope drop-in project, providing a gateway for women to begin recovery from substance abuse.

Seasons of Hope allows us to support women struggling with addiction by providing a warm and welcoming place off the streets and out of harm’s way. It was born as a response to the Imperial Avenue tragedy and an effort to reach women who need our help but may not be ready to fully embrace recovery yet. This project helps us remember that treatment offers healing, renewal, and hope but it is a process that is different for everyone. Seasons of Hope does not require that a woman fully commit to treatment in order to get help and be removed from the despair and dangers of addiction. The projects requires only that a woman needs a place of respite and a willingness to learn about what is possible and what resources exist, allowing us the chance to show women how to build a bridge from despair to hope.

Seasons of Hope offers women a place for change, shelter from harm, and the opportunity to move from a place of despair to a place of hope, from fear to safety, from addiction to healing and recovery. We are proud to have had a hand in this process and are honored to be the entry point for this transition. We believe that healing takes on many forms and this drop-in center will be a starting place for many who previously had nowhere to go and little hope for real change.

We are proud to be part of a community that saw a problem and identified a way to help women and the community to begin the journey of healing, a way to move from the dark and cold days of winter to the healing and renewing days of spring.

Laughter, tears, healing, and fellowship decked the halls of Hitchcock for the annual holiday party. Amongst the festive holiday decorations and nostalgic Christmas music, the women of Hitchcock were treated to delicious cookies, candy, and treats and also were able to experience the practice of Reiki. Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.

Fun was had by all, and was a welcome kick-off to the holiday season!
